Our colleague Frank, tool on an extraordinary adventure.
Last June, Frank Mullen, a 61-year-old project manager and proud Scouts leader from Donabate, set out on an extraordinary journey. Determined to highlight the importance of exercise, community, and living in the moment, Frank took on a remarkable 300KM solo kayak expedition down the River Shannon.
Diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2023, Frank refused to let the condition define his life. Instead, he turned it into a motivation to live more fully and to inspire others to do the same.
"The one gift Parkinson's has given me is the excuse to live for today. Receiving a diagnosis like this is tough, but there is absolutely no reason why I can’t have a full and long life, with the right medication and the right fitness regime.”
Over 10 days, Frank paddled an average of 30KM per day in support of Parkinson’s Ireland. His initiative, #Paddle4Parkinsons, was both a personal challenge and a powerful campaign to raise awareness and funds for the 15,000 people in Ireland living with Parkinson’s.
The original goal was to raise €10,000, but thanks to the phenomenal support from Frank’s colleagues, scouting friends, family, and broader community, he more than tripled that target. Together, they raised an incredible €35,582.
Frank’s journey was made possible thanks to the unwavering support of his colleagues at Payzone.
From the moment Frank shared his plan, Payzone got behind him wholeheartedly. The team helped secure national media coverage, including an interview on RTÉ’s Brendan O’Connor Show, where Frank spoke openly about his diagnosis, his motivation, and his mission to raise awareness.
Beyond publicity and promotion, Payzone’s support ran far deeper. The company was fully accommodating of Frank’s needs following his diagnosis and allowed him the time and space to train in the lead-up to the challenge, as well as to complete the expedition itself. Without that support and flexibility, the journey simply wouldn’t have been possible.
Colleagues rallied in every way; donating, sharing his fundraising page, and even joining him on the water for stretches of the trip. Payzone also provided branded materials for the kayaks, ensuring that #Paddle4Parkinsons stood out as he kayaked through the Shannon.
This show of solidarity and generosity was a powerful reminder of the strength of community.
