Our approach
At Payzone, we are committed to building a sustainable, inclusive, and thriving business that makes a positive impact on our environment, society, and governance. Guided by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), we focus on three core areas: decent work and economic growth, sustainable cities and communities, and climate action. Our ESG strategy aligns with these goals and is embedded across all aspects of our business.

A statement from our CEO, Jim Deignan
"At Payzone, our success is defined not just by financial growth but by the positive impact we have on society. Our commitment to ESG principles drives us to create a more sustainable and inclusive future for everyone we serve.
Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, we’re focused on promoting health and well-being, gender equality, climate action, and building sustainable communities. From supporting our employees to fostering innovation in green mobility, we’re proud of the progress we’ve made and remain dedicated to driving positive change.
Together, we’re shaping a better tomorrow."
What are we trying to achieve?

Our goal is to embed responsible and sustainable practices at the heart of everything we do.
We are committed to creating a healthier, more inclusive workplace. One that champions employee well-being, diversity, and equal opportunities. Beyond our organisation, we contribute to the wider community by supporting local charities and promoting access to sustainable mobility through initiatives like our partnership with Bleeper.
We also recognise our environmental responsibilities. That’s why we are actively reducing our carbon footprint, investing in greener technologies, and embedding sustainability into every aspect of our operations.
These efforts reflect our ambition to be a positive force, for our people, our communities, and the planet.
Decent work and economic growth
Promote sustained, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all.

Initiatives:
At Payzone, we are focused on building a fair and inclusive workplace. We conduct regular gender pay gap reviews and are actively working towards a gender-balanced board by supporting women in leadership roles. Our family support policies including maternity, paternity, and parental leave are designed to promote work-life balance without impacting career progression.
To nurture employee growth, we provide leadership development programmes, skills training, and mentoring opportunities. We also foster inclusive hiring practices, including a long-standing partnership with DCU to attract diverse talent. These efforts are underpinned by strong governance frameworks, including our Code of Conduct, Speak Up policy, and Health & Safety standards, which guide how we operate and support our team.
Feature story: Developing and promoting talent

Payzone makes an annual contribution to the DCU Access Programme, which supports students from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds in accessing third-level education.

Sustainable cities & communities
Make cities and communities inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

Initiatives:
Our commitment to building stronger communities is reflected in the work of our CSR committee, established in 2023.
Since then, Payzone has donated over €70,000 to a diverse range of causes, selected annually by our employees. These include charities such as ALONE, the Alzheimer Society of Ireland, GOAL, and Aoibheann’s Pink Tie. Organisations that focus on critical areas like healthcare, social inclusion, and age-related support.
In addition to financial contributions, we offer logistical assistance and strategic advice to our charity partners, helping maximise the impact of their work. We also support our clients’ charitable initiatives, partnering with retailers and utility providers to help advance causes like the National Breast Cancer Research Institute, Lauralynn, and Focus Ireland.

In late 2022, St. Vincent de Paul (SVP), in partnership with Payzone, launched a €1 million energy voucher initiative, redeemable across our 3,500 Payzone stores nationwide.

Climate action
We aim to reduce our carbon footprint and encourage sustainable practices in our operations.

Initiatives:
As a business that relies heavily on IT infrastructure, Payzone is committed to minimising its environmental impact through smart, sustainable technology choices.
We use a dual strategy of virtualisation and data center hosting to reduce energy use and electronic waste. Virtualisation allows us to run hundreds of virtual servers on a small number of physical machines, dramatically cutting down our hardware footprint. Hosting our systems in purpose-built data centers gives us access to efficient shared cooling systems and optimised server layouts that minimise energy consumption.
Our data center partners also share our commitment to continuous improvements in energy efficiency and sustainable practices, making this a core part of our long-term environmental strategy.
Feature story: A new way to move through the city
In partnership with Bleeper, Dublin’s longest-running stationless bike service, Payzone enables users to find, unlock, and pay for Bleeper bikes directly through their Payzone account.

Feature story: Driving towards a greener future
In 2023, Payzone transitioned its entire sales fleet to fully electric vehicles, reinforcing our commitment to lower emissions and environmentally responsible practices.
